BOLTS Mini Camp is just Around the Corner

Football season is just around the corner. I can already sense the energy throughout Charger park. There's a feeling of excitement and anticipation here. You can tell by the energy guys are putting into workouts. Everyone is working hard, from the superstars to the bench guys and we've had just about perfect attendance for our off-season workouts. Everyone has one goal in mind, to win the Super Bowl. It's always exciting to get back on the field. We will have some familiar faces as we go through camp and some new ones as well. We'll have a number of new draft picks and undrafted free agents coming in. I'll be looking forward to seeing what they all bring to the table, especially rookies Craig Davis and Eric Weddle. We also have a brand new coaching staff. It will be interesting to see how we all interact with them. They all seem to be great guys. I've been working a lot with our new defensive backs coach, Kevin Ross. Today, we spent two hours working one on one and watching film together. The mini-camp this Friday is open to the public, which I think will greatly heighten the intensity of our practices. Some players get nervous around a crowd. I'm a player who feeds off of the fans and look forward to them being there. If you're in San Diego, come support your Chargers as we strive for excellence. Go Chargers!!!!

Nash or Magic

It's always good to come home to Louisiana to visit family and friends. It's sort of a break just before we get busy with football. I've enjoyed my week off and my time home. I will be leaving for San Diego on Sunday. Team workouts continue on Monday and we'll have a mini camp at the end of the week with some new faces. Yesterday I went to LSU to visit a friend (TC) from high school and we started to talk sports as we usually do. We talked about everything, but got into it when he mentioned that the Phoenix Suns were the team he was rooting for. The debate started when I asked him who was his favorite player was, knowing it was probably Nash. It was. He believes that Nash will when his 3rd straight MVP award. I often wonder who is doing the voting here. I almost forgot that he has all of Canada behind him. Just kidding. Anyways, I asked him who he would start his team with, Magic Johnson or Steve Nash. He chose Nash again. They both have similar abilities and great supporting casts. The things that separate them in my mind is a little height and 5 CHAMPIONSHIPS. Not to mention, there's a lot of talented players in the NBA who make their teams better. Don't get me wrong, I like Nash. I think he is a helluva player, but until he wins 1 championship, I can't consider him a true 3 in a row MVP winner. Give it to Dirk or Kobe.

Draft Thoughts.....

It's been a busy week for me. I worked out with the team Thursday morning at 7:30 and then had a flight at noon to Miami to attend a Jay Fiedler charity event that raised money for CF (Cystic Fibrosis). Then I got on a plane to Louisiana to celebrate my birthday. I spent a lot of time on the plane thinking about the upcoming draft. The draft is intense for everyone involved. The whole thing is a long waiting process. For a lot of guys, you sit around not knowing if you are going to be drafted. I watched the draft with my family and when I wasn't selected, I knew it wasn't the end of the world. I actually got a few calls twenty minutes after the draft. It was a relief to know I had an opportunity to show teams what I had to offer. Even for expected top picks like Russell, Quinn and Johnson the whole process is intense. They'll have more security, but every rookie has something to prove. I think each of those players have something special to bring to the table. Russell is a big and smooth athlete with a tremendous arm and loads of potential. Then there's Brady who has a lot of experience in a NFL system and has been guided by Coach Weis. Johnson has size, speed and playmaking ability which forces teams to consider him the #1 Choice. Who would you pick 1st if you where a GM? I think that each of these players are safe picks, but if I had to chose....Calvin Johnson would be my guy. That would mean, Johnson and Moss would be on opposite sides. That's tough for defenses. When you have two guys like that with similar abilities someone is going to be left one on one. You can't always bring a safety over the top for help. When you have big receivers, that's a mismatch for our defensive backs. The addition of Johnson would affect the way AFC West teams gameplan for the Raiders.
